Optimising the online class scheduling and revision experience

Introduction
Meraki is a free online learning platform that introduces tech topics like Programming, Scratch and also supplementary topics like Typing and English to underprivileged young kids by partnering with relevant schools and NGOs.
What was our main concern?
After the pilot run, Meraki’s students were facing immense frustration for having to enroll for each and every class of a learning track such as Python. The interface was bombarding them with all the classes of various courses all at one place.
The classes were held via Google Meets. Often, students were asking teachers or other students to share them the links as they would rather not enroll in the classes on the app. Meraki wanted to solve this problem and reduce the manual overload for both the teachers and the students.
Design Approach
User research: As the first step, we conducted a series of user interviews with seven students to understand their daily problems:
1. Students were frustrated having to enroll to their course classes every single time
2. Students needed to manually keep track of the timetable of the classes to enroll into them
3. The classes and course content were separate, and it was creating a lack of interest in the app course content. Most students were not happy with the content quality and were being reliant on the classes
Upon understanding the problems, our team introduced the following solutions:
1. Batches for the learning tracks which are a collection of the classes of a learning track which needed only one time enrollment
2. Students would now login with a specialized partner link and would only view their batch. They would not see any other batches or classes
3. Classes were now embedded within the course content to give seamless experience where the related content followed after a class was completed
4. Implementation of revision classes for students who needed to revise old topics or who missed a class. These were classes from other batches which a student from an already ahead batch could join for that particular moment without being part of another batch

Impact
1. Outreach team successfully onboarded numerous schools and thousands of students from Haryana Government based on the improved product.
2. An 87.5% increase in app engagement was recorded in the months following the app release.
